Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an American media franchise created by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The franchise started out as a comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which Eastman and Laird conceived as a parody of elements popular in superhero comics at the time, and the first issue was published in 1984.
The franchise follows Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael, four anthropomorphic turtle brothers (named after Italian Renaissance artists), who are trained in ninja martial arts (ninjutsu) to fight evil in New York City.
Supporting characters include Splinter, the Turtles’ adoptive father and ninjutsu instructor, and their human friends and allies April O’Neil and Casey Jones. From their hideout in the sewers of Manhattan, the Turtles battle a variety of enemies, including Dr. Baxter Stockman, Krang and their nemesis The Shredder.
In addition to various comic book series, the TMNT franchise consists of television series, films, toys and video games.
Funko Pop! vinyl figures of the four turtles and other characters from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise have been released in several Funko Pop! series including Pop! Television, Pop! Movies, Pop! Retro Toys and Pop! Art Series.
