A Charlie Brown Christmas is a 1965 animated television special, produced by Lee Mendelson and directed by Bill Melendez.
It is the first television special based on the comic strip Peanuts by American cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. After the comic strip’s debut in 1950, Peanuts had become a worldwide phenomenon by the mid-1960s.
In the special, Charlie Brown feels depressed despite the start of the cheerful holidays. After Lucy van Pelt suggests directing a Christmas play in the neighborhood, his efforts are ignored and mocked by his colleagues when he chooses a puny Christmas tree as his centerpiece.
The television special, commissioned and sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, made its debut on the CBS television network on December 9, 1965.
A Charlie Brown Christmas received high ratings and critical acclaim from critics. It received an Emmy and a Peabody Award, and became an annual presentation in the United States, airing on television during the Christmas season for 56 years before becoming available exclusively on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
The success of the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas paved the way for a series of Peanuts television specials and films.
