The Shrek media franchise is a highly successful series of animated films and spin-offs that began with the release of the first Shrek movie in 2001 by DreamWorks Animation.
The franchise is based on William Steig’s 1990 fairy tale picture book, Shrek!, and revolves around the adventures of a bad-tempered but good-hearted ogre named Shrek, his loyal (and talkative) companion Donkey, and their journey through a parody-filled, fairy tale world.
The Shrek franchise consists of four animated films: Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010), as well as a 4D short film called Shrek 4-D, which was originally a theme park ride, and two television specials. It also inspired Shrek the Musical, which premiered on Broadway in 2008.
Two spin-off films were made centered around the character Puss in Boots: 2011’s Puss in Boots and its sequel, 2022’s The Last Wish.
Characters from the Shrek franchise have been transformed into Funko Pop! vinyl figures and are part of the Funko Pop! Movies series. The newly released Funko Pop! Donkey with Waffles (Scented) figure is a BoxLunch Exclusive and was released as a collaboration between BoxLunch, Funko and Feeding America to celebrate Hunger Action Month in September.
