Batman: The Animated Series (often shortened as Batman TAS or BTAS) is an American animated superhero television series based on the DC Comics superhero Batman.
Developed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski and produced by Warner Bros. Animation, it has been critically acclaimed for its dark, atmospheric tone, complex characters and mature storytelling, setting a new standard for animated superhero series.
Batman: The Animated Series features Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne and Mark Hamill as the iconic voice of the Joker.
Set in Gotham City, the show follows Batman as he battles his infamous rogues’ gallery, including villains like the Joker, Two-Face, Poison Ivy and the Penguin, while also dealing with his internal struggles and double life as Bruce Wayne. The animation style is inspired by 1940s noir films, often referred to as “Dark Deco”, giving the show a timeless, gothic aesthetic.
The series is also notable for introducing original characters like Harley Quinn, who later became a major figure in the DC Comics universe.
Batman: The Animated Series originally aired on Fox Kids from September 5, 1992 to September 15, 1995, for a total of 85 episodes. Mid-way through the series’ run, it was re-titled The Adventures of Batman & Robin.
In 1997, a sequel titled The New Batman Adventures aired on Kids’ WB. A continuation of the series, which served as the third and final season of 24 episodes, with a revamped animation style.
