Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a popular Japanese anime television series based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge.
It follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted boy who becomes a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered by demons, and his younger sister Nezuko is turned into one. Determined to find a cure for Nezuko and avenge his family, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization dedicated to eradicating demons.
The series is set in Taisho-era Japan, where demons – former humans transformed by absorbing the blood of the demon lord Muzan Kibutsuji – prey on humans. These demons possess supernatural abilities and can only be killed by special weapons, sunlight, or decapitation by Nichirin Blades, the swords used by demon slayers.
Throughout the series, Tanjiro encounters a range of allies, including the cowardly but skilled Zenitsu Agatsuma and the boar-headed fighter Inosuke Hashibira, who join him on his journey. Together, they face powerful demons, each with unique abilities, while Tanjiro hones his skills in the Water Breathing sword technique.
The anime is well-known for its breathtaking animation, especially its dynamic fight scenes, which are beautifully crafted by ufotable, the studio behind the adaptation.
The anime’s first season aired in 2019 and gained widespread acclaim, leading to the release of a highly successful film, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020), which became the highest-grossing anime film of all time.
The series has since continued with new seasons, further exploring Tanjiro’s journey, the backstories of the demon slayers and the battle against Muzan.
