The Child’s Play franchise, commonly known as the Chucky franchise, is a long-running series of American horror films that began in 1988 with Child’s Play.
The franchise is centered around a malevolent doll named Chucky, who is possessed by the soul of a notorious serial killer, Charles Lee Ray.
Through a voodoo ritual, Ray transfers his soul into the “Good Guy” doll while dying. The franchise mixes elements of supernatural horror, slasher themes, and dark comedy as Chucky embarks on a killing spree, often targeting those connected to his original identity or trying to find a human host to possess.
The original film, Child’s Play, was released on November 9, 1988. It is the first film in the Child’s Play series and the first installment to feature the character Chucky. The film spawned six sequels – Child’s Play 2 (1990), Child’s Play 3 (1991), Bride of Chucky (1998), Seed of Chucky (2004), Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017) – and a remake Child’s Play (2019).
In addition to the films, the franchise has expanded into a successful TV series (Chucky), which debuted in 2021, continuing the storylines of past characters and maintaining its blend of horror and humor.
Over the years, Chucky has become an iconic horror villain due to his creepy design, sharp wit, and violent tendencies. The character’s portrayal by Brad Dourif (voice of Chucky) has become a hallmark of the franchise.
