How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a Christmas children’s book by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, written in rhyming verse with illustrations by the author.
The book tells the story of the Grinch, a grumpy, lonely creature who lives on a mountain overlooking Whoville, home of the Whos. The Grinch has been annoyed by Whoville’s noisy Christmas festivities for years and decides to thwart the public’s Christmas plans.
Disguised as Santa Claus, he travels to Whoville on a sleigh pulled by his dog Max, in an attempt to steal the Whos’ Christmas gifts and decorations. Miraculously, the Grinch realizes that Christmas is not all about money and presents.
The story was published in book form by Random House in 1957 and at about the same time in an issue of the American women’s magazine Redbook. The book has been adapted into a variety of media, including stage and film.
A sequel, titled How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, was released on September 5, 2023, published by Random House Children’s Books. The book was written by Alastair Heim and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz.
