Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball player known for his unique ability to excel as both a pitcher and a hitter, a rare combination in modern baseball.
Born on July 5, 1994, in Oshu, Japan, Ohtani gained early fame in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters before joining Major League Baseball (MLB) in 2018 with the Los Angeles Angels.
Ohtani’s skill set is exceptional. As a pitcher, he throws a fastball that can reach over 100 mph and has a variety of off-speed pitches. As a hitter, he has tremendous power, regularly hitting home runs and achieving impressive batting averages.
His 2021 season is often highlighted as historic, as he became the first player in MLB history to be named an All-Star as both a pitcher and a designated hitter. That year, he hit 46 home runs and had a 9-2 record as a pitcher with a 3.18 ERA, solidifying his reputation as one of the most versatile and dominant players in baseball.
Ohtani has been compared to legendary players like Babe Ruth due to his two-way abilities, which had not been seen at this level in decades. He has received numerous accolades, including the American League MVP award, and continues to be one of the most exciting and marketable players in baseball worldwide.
After the 2023 season, Ohtani signed a ten-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the largest contract in the history of professional sports.
On September 19, 2024, Ohtani hit his 49th, 50th and 51st homer of 2024, and also stole his 50th and 51st bases of the season, becoming the founding member of the 50-50 club. The only player in Major League Baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season.
His impact has redefined what is possible in modern professional baseball.
