Wicked is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu, serving as the first installment of a two-part adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical.
The film reimagines the world of The Wizard of Oz by focusing on the untold story of Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), the misunderstood, green-skinned young woman who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
Her unlikely friendship with the popular and ambitious Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande), later known as Glinda the Good, forms the heart of the story.
The film explores their contrasting personalities, aspirations, and struggles in a society that judges Elphaba for her appearance and unconventional beliefs. As the two navigate their time at Shiz University, their friendship is tested by political intrigue, romance, and the manipulative forces of the Wizard of Oz.

Featuring a stellar supporting cast, including Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum, Wicked is a visually stunning and emotionally compelling adaptation.
The film brings iconic songs such as “Defying Gravity” and “Popular” to the big screen while expanding the world of Oz with breathtaking cinematography and special effects.
Released on November 22, 2024, Wicked received widespread acclaim for its performances, visuals, and faithful adaptation of the stage musical. It became the highest-grossing musical film adaptation to date and earned multiple Academy Award nominations.
The story will conclude in the sequel, Wicked: For Good, set for release on November 21, 2025, further exploring the fate of Elphaba, Glinda, and the events leading to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz.
