Castlevania: Nocturne is an American dark fantasy animated series on Netflix, serving as a sequel to the original Castlevania series.

The story centers on Richter Belmont, a descendant of the famed vampire-hunting Belmont clan. Traumatized by the murder of his mother by the Aztec vampire Olrox, Richter is raised in France by Speaker magician Tera Renard and her daughter Maria.
As the aristocracy aligns with Erzsebet Báthory—a vampire messiah seeking to plunge the world into eternal darkness—Richter teams up with Maria, Caribbean sorceress Annette, and opera singer Edouard to resist the vampiric uprising. Their mission is complicated by personal traumas, ideological conflicts, and the looming threat of Erzsebet’s godlike powers.
Season 1 establishes the central conflict, highlighting the characters’ struggles against both external threats and internal demons. Season 2 intensifies the stakes with the arrival of Alucard, Dracula’s son, who joins the fight against Erzsebet. The narrative delves deeper into themes of identity, loyalty, and the cost of revolution, as characters confront their pasts and the consequences of their choices.
The series has been praised for its rich animation, complex characters, and mature storytelling. It reimagines characters like Annette, transforming her from a damsel in distress into a powerful, voodoo-wielding freedom fighter. Olrox, the Aztec vampire, is portrayed with nuance, offering a fresh perspective on the traditional antagonist role.
While Castlevania: Nocturne excels in many areas, some critics have noted that its exploration of colonialism and its impact on regions like Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti) could be more fully developed.
Nevertheless, the series stands out as a compelling continuation of the Castlevania universe, blending supernatural horror with historical drama to create a gripping narrative.
