The Sword in the Stone is a 1963 American animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney and released by Buena Vista Distribution.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by T.H. White, originally written as a standalone work in 1938, then revised and republished in 1958 as the first book of White’s Arthurian tetralogy The Once and Future King.

The Sword in the Stone is the 18th Disney animated film and the last Walt Disney Productions animated film released, before Walt Disney’s death on December 15, 1966.

The film is set in medieval England, where chaos reigns after the death of King Uther Pendragon, who dies leaving no heir to the throne. A sword magically appears in an anvil, itself embedded in a stone, with an inscription proclaiming that whoever removes the sword is the rightful king of England. Many try, but no one succeeds in removing the sword.

Years later, an 11-year-old orphan named Arthur, nicknamed Wart, meets Merlin, an elderly wizard who lives with his talking pet owl Archimedes. Merlin declares himself Arthur’s tutor and teaches him, through a number of life lessons, the importance of knowledge and intelligence.
