The film reimagines the classic English folklore about the heroic outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor. In this version, the characters are portrayed as anthropomorphic animals.
Robin Hood, a clever and brave fox, and his loyal companion Little John, a bear, fight against the corrupt Prince John, a cowardly and greedy lion, who has usurped the throne in the absence of King Richard.
The film follows Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men as they outsmart Prince John and his minions, including the bumbling Sheriff of Nottingham (a wolf), in order to redistribute wealth among the oppressed townspeople of Nottingham.
Along the way, Robin Hood rekindles his romance with Maid Marian, a kind and graceful vixen, while using his wit and archery skills to stay one step ahead of the law.
Alan-A-Dale is a rooster who serves as the film’s narrator and minstrel. He introduces the story and provides musical interludes throughout the film. His character is based on the traditional Alan-a-Dale from the Robin Hood legend, who was a minstrel in Robin’s band of Merry Men.
Disney’s Robin Hood became the first animated film produced without Walt Disney’s involvement. Robin Hood was released on November 8, 1973 and became a cult classic in the years that followed.
