She-Ra: Princess of Power is an American animated television series that debuted on September 9, 1985, as a spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Created by Filmation in collaboration with Mattel, the show was designed to appeal to a young female audience and expand the Masters of the Universe franchise.
Unlike He-Man, which was based on the Masters of the Universe toy line by Mattel, the creation of She-Ra was a collaboration between Filmation and Mattel.
The story follows Princess Adora, the twin sister of Prince Adam (He-Man), who was kidnapped as a baby and raised by the villainous Hordak on the planet Etheria. Under his influence, she served as a Force Captain for the Evil Horde until her brother helped her break free.
Armed with the Sword of Protection, Adora transforms into She-Ra, a powerful warrior princess with superhuman abilities. She joins the Great Rebellion, a group of freedom fighters dedicated to overthrowing Hordak and liberating Etheria.
The series ran for two seasons with 93 episodes, ending in 1987. Known for its themes of courage, justice, and resistance, the show offered a strong female protagonist and became a cultural touchstone for many.
Its legacy was revitalized with the critically acclaimed 2018 reboot She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, introducing the character to a new generation.
As She-Ra: Princess of Power approaches its 40th anniversary in 2025, it continues to be celebrated for its empowering messages and iconic role in shaping animated storytelling.
