A blast from the past: Back to the Future is back to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the popular movie franchise.
Back to the Future transformed into Funko Pop! vinyl.
Back to the Future is an American science fiction adventure comedy film series written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, produced by Bob Gale and Neil Canton for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and distributed by Universal Pictures.
The movie franchise follows the adventures of high school student Marty McFly and eccentric scientist Doctor Emmett L. Brown, as they use a DeLorean time machine to time travel to different periods in the history and future of Hill Valley, California.
Back to the Future was released in 1985 and the movie was an instant success. The movie won several awards and received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
In the first movie of the franchise, Marty McFly accidentally travels back to 1955, where he meets his future parents and becomes his mother’s romantic interest. Doctor Emmett “Doc” Brown, his friend and the inventor of the time-traveling DeLorean automobile, helps Marty repair history and return back to 1985.
Back to the Future II was released in 1989. In part two of the franchise, Marty and Doc re-enter the DeLorean time machine to travel to 2015 to adjust the future. In the future they meet the rich and powerful bully Biff Tannen, as well as Marty McFly, who has since become a father.
In 1990 part three of the franchise was released, called Back to the Future III. Doc Brown has built a life in the turbulent Wild West and Marty travels back to 1885 to save Doc’s life.
Despite being released in 1985, Back to the Future remains an iconic movie passed down from generation to generation. And as with any successful movie, Funko is ready to transform the main characters into Pop! vinyl figures. The Funko Pop! Back to the Future set is part of the Pop! Movies series and the first Pop! vinyl figures of the movie were released in 2014.
The first two Back to the Future Pop! vinyl figures might be confusing for some Pop! collectors, since there are different box numbers with the same figures. The first packages were printed as #61 for Marty McFly and #62 for Dr. Emmett Brown. This however conflicted with the numbering for two Pulp Fiction Pop! vinyl figures. The Back to the Future duo ultimately ended up with #49 for Marty McFly and #50 for Dr. Emmett Brown.
In honor of Back to the Future’s 35th anniversary, many new Pop! vinyl figures were reveiled at New York Toy Fair 2020. At the beginning of July this year, the Pop! Back to the Future set will be expanded with seven new Pop! vinyl figures, including figures of Marty McFly, Doc Emmett Brown and bully Biff Tannen.
The set will be completed with a Pop! vinyl figure of Doc with Clock Tower, which will be released in the Pop! Town series.
