The Aristocats is a 1970 American animated romantic musical comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions. It is the 20th Disney animated film and the last film project to be personally approved by Disney before his death in December 1966.
Based on a story by Tom McGowan and Tom Rowe, the film is set in Paris and revolves around a family of aristocratic cats – mother cat Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie, and Toulouse – and how an alley cat named Thomas O’Malley helps them after a butler has kidnapped them to gain his mistress’s fortune which was intended to go to them.
The Aristocats was originally released to theaters on December 24, 1970. It was re-released in theaters in 1980 and 1987. It was released on VHS in Europe on January 1, 1990 and in the UK in 1995. It was first released on VHS in North America on April 24, 1996 as part of the Masterpiece Collection. A live-action remake is currently in development.
