Funko has announced five new Don Clemente Loteria Funko Pop! vinyl figures as part of Funko Pop! Board Games series.

Loteria illustrations transformed into Funko Pop! figures.

Loteria (Spanish word for “lottery”) is a traditional Mexican game of chance, similar to bingo, but using illustrations on a deck of cards instead of numbered ping pong balls.

The origins of loteria go way back in history and the game originated in Italy in the 15th century and was brought to New Spain (present-day Mexico) in 1769.

French businessman Don Clemente Jacques began publishing the game in Mexico in 1887 and his version of the game, known as the “Don Clemente Gallo” version, was distributed to Mexican soldiers along with their rations and supplies.

The illustrations Don Clemente used in his card designs have become iconic in Mexican culture, and the artwork of the original deck has remained the same since its introduction in 1887.

The traditional Loteria card deck consists of a set of 54 different cards, each with a different colorful illustration. Each card contains the name of the illustration and has an assigned number.

Each player of the game has at least one tabla, a bingo-like board with a randomly created grid of 4 x 4 illustrations with their corresponding name and number. Players choose a tabla (Spanish word for “board”) to play with, from a variety of previously created tablas, each with a different selection of illustrations.

To start the game, the caller (cantor, Spanish for “singer”) shuffles the deck. One by one, the caller picks a card from the deck and announces it to the players by its name, sometimes using a verse before reading the card name.

Each player locates the matching illustration of the card just announced on their board and marks it with a token or some other type of marker. Similar to Bingo, a player can win by being the first to mark all illustrations on their board, or by marking a previous agreed pattern, like a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line.

A number of illustrations of the Don Clemente Loteria game have been transformed into Funko Pop! vinyl figures and are part of the Pop! Board Games series. Funko has announced five new Loteria Funko Pop! vinyl figures, including exclusive Glow in the Dark variants of El Diablito (PX Previews) and La Muerte (Entertainment Earth).
