Saw characters transformed into Funko Pop! vinyl figures
Saw is a 2004 American psychological horror film directed by James Wan in his feature directorial debut, and written by Leigh Whannell, from a story by Wan and Whannell.
It kickstarted the infamous Saw franchise and became a cult hit due to its brutal traps, grim atmosphere, and twisted plot.
The film is centered around two men—Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and Adam Stanheight (Leigh Whannell)—who wake up chained in a filthy, dilapidated bathroom with no idea how they got there. Between them lies the corpse of a man who apparently shot himself in the head.
As the men try to piece together the situation, they discover they are pawns in a deadly game orchestrated by a serial killer known as the Jigsaw Killer. Unlike typical murderers, Jigsaw doesn’t kill his victims directly. Instead, he places them in elaborate traps where they must perform gruesome tasks to survive—often forcing them to make horrific moral choices.
Dr. Gordon learns that he must kill Adam by a certain time or his wife and daughter will die. Tension rises as flashbacks reveal Jigsaw’s previous victims and the elaborate psychological nature of his traps. It becomes clear that Jigsaw’s twisted philosophy centers on making people “appreciate life” by putting them through extreme pain and suffering.
The plot intensifies as Detective Tapp (Danny Glover), a cop obsessed with catching Jigsaw, gets involved. His pursuit leads to tragic consequences and further emphasizes the killer’s manipulative reach.
In the film’s final, shocking twist, the supposedly dead body in the room stands up—revealing himself to be John Kramer, the real Jigsaw Killer. He was watching them the entire time. Adam screams as Kramer locks the door and utters his chilling catchphrase: “Game over.”
Saw gained notoriety for its low-budget ingenuity, disturbing themes, and the rise of the “torture porn” subgenre. More than just gore, the film taps into psychological horror, moral dilemmas, and human desperation. Its success spawned a long-running franchise and solidified Jigsaw as one of modern horror’s most iconic villains.
