Moana (also known as Vaiana or Oceania in some markets) is a 2016 American computer-animated musical fantasy action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 56th Disney animated feature film directed by John Musker and Ron Clements.
Set in ancient Polynesia, the film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of Tui, the chief of the Polynesian island of Motunui, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti , the goddess of nature.
When a blight strikes her island, killing vegetation and shrinking the fish catch, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary shape-shifting demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people.
Moana premiered during the AFI Fest at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 14, 2016, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 23.
A live-action remake of Moana is scheduled for release in 2025, while a spin-off series is scheduled to premiere on Disney+.
